the last day of october 2019

i fell across a ladder
and the window
fell apart beneath my feet

before you left the stale croissant crumble
on the felt lined library chair

so i borrowed a book
for the first time
in my life

julia wanted me to take the kite
to a different park than yesterday

permanent green slumber
strewn across my face
forty five degree sun tan

i left the prude purple spine
next to the pinstriped jacket

and told you seven words
for twenty four
living hours

julia went searching for a family photo
while she sang her saturday song

and once again
i let the string
slip away
