a trimmed tree is no place for song birds is a group exhibition exploring cultural identity through a shared sensitivity towards materiality and material culture. Spanning textiles, weaving, sculpture, installation, painting and sound, these works investigate themes of diasporic identity, family & ancestry, and folklore & mythology.

Whether using traditional Tongan cloth, Japanese fabric, or Scottish wool, these artists’ employment of natural and found materials reflects a sensitivity and love towards their respective cultures, and the exhibition invites viewers to consider how identity is embedded within the material.
